A man who had been pulled over and ticketed by police ran backward up and onto a Buffalo Grove squad car Friday morning, apparently in his haste to drive off.

Henry Raskin, 70, of Niles had been pulled over by a Buffalo Grove officer on the 400 block of Dundee Road around 11:30 a.m. Friday for driving 58 mph in a 35 mph zone, Sgt. Scott Kristiansen said.

The officer wrote the ticket and returned to the car, and Raskin got ready to drive away. Except he went flying backward.

"(He) apparently was going to pull away at a high rate of speed, but the only problem was that he was in reverse," Kristiansen said.

He said Raskin was not happy about getting a ticket. He said police are reviewing the squad car videotape to see what Raskin might also be charged with.

Raskin was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights as a precaution.

Kristiansen said police don't believe Raskin has any medical conditions that could have led to the crash. Raskin's age also didn't seem to play a factor, he said.

The officer, a 20-year veteran of the Buffalo Grove department, was not injured, but his car will be out of service for a while.

"He ended up with the left rear wheel of the car coming through his windshield, about 6 inches from his face," Kristiansen said. "Luckily, he was not injured."

The squad car suffered significant damage to the front end, including the windshield and the hood.

Kristiansen said the police investigation so far shows the officer initiated the traffic stop properly. He said officers are trained to treat every stop as if it isn't a routine procedure so that they are aware when unexpected circumstances like this one take place.

"The officer stopped the car properly and positioned himself properly," he said.

Throwing elbows, punching in the back, tripping, hair pulling, kicking into someone's face and sucker punches? Sounds like a typical scrum between young siblings. Well, in the 2009 MWN semifinal match between BYU and New Mexico, there was no lipstick, no perfume and no fingernail polish. There was, however, good old fashioned chick fighting.

Check out the BYU's Kassidy Shumway (21) getting her bell rung (or neck snapped) by New Mexico's Elizabeth Lambert (15). I loved a good chick fight as much as the next guy, but c'mon. That's the equivalent of a guy hitting below the belt. That's bush league, sweetie. Yep, bush league.

Sjajan nacin da zabavi studente.

Evo sta on kaze o svemu ovome:

This is a Halloween video trick I did for my Nature of Math class at Biola University, October 28, 2009. It was another experiment in video editing and mixing video with live action.

UPDATE: NOV 1, 2009
Thanks for all the compliments. I appreciate it. All this attention was quite a surprise - I mainly posted the video for the students who weren't in class that day, and so my students could pass it on to a few friends. After the first version started getting a bunch of hits, I wished I had spent a little time cleaning up the audio, so I posted "Version 2," which is pretty much the same, but my voice turned up a bit.

I've read a bunch of comments, and I have a few general responses:

Math: No, I wasn't actually trying to teach anything with the video - it was just for fun. This was the last 5 minutes of a 75 minute class - I actually taught real math for the first 70 minutes. And yes, I love teaching this class, and I try to keep it lively by doing little fun things like this once in a while.

Software/Camera: I used Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, version 12.1 - the "picture-in-picture" feature for the special effects. I filmed it with a simple Panasonic PV-GS35 MiniDV camcorder.

Idea/Time: I did this last semester as an April Fool's joke. New class, new year, I decided to try it again, with a few more twists. It took me about 45 minutes to film the video, maybe 2 hours to edit and refine it, then I practiced the interaction with the video a couple times.

Class: This was filmed with a video camera on a tripod in the back of class, with about 80 people in class that day. Those are real people, not a laugh track. The class is called "Nature of Math," and is a general education class for non-math people. We do some basic math and study the history and philosophy of math. Yes, that's Edwin Abbott's "Flatland" I mention - students have to read it for the class.

Biola (biola.edu) is a private Christian university located in a Los Angeles suburb. I don't place much significance in Halloween, but I don't mind trivializing the day, and making it just about candy and costumes. The disclaimer at the end of version 2 is an imitation of the disclaimer Michael Jackson put at the beginning of his "Thriller" video. (BTW, Biola grad Judith Hill sang the last song at his funeral. Yeah, Biola!)

So thanks again for all your generous comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope it inspires you to go out and do creative, fun things of your own.

Happy Halloween
